PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS PRESENTS MANDOLIN VIRTUOSO & MACARTHUR "GENIUS" CHRIS THILE AT RICHARDSON AUDITORIUM IN ALEXANDER HALL ON OCTOBER 24, 2013

Princeton University Concerts, in collaboration with McCarter Theatre, is thrilled to present the celebrated solo mandolin player Chris Thile at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall on Thursday evening, October 24 at 7:30PM. The program features transcriptions of the Bach Violin Sonatas and Partitas, plus Mr. Thile's own compositions and other contemporary works.

Mr. Thile, a multiple Grammy Award winner, whom The New York Times calls "the instrument's brightest star," transitions between genres with the greatest of ease. He is a former member of the trio Nickel Creek and current member of the Bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers, collaborator with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, bassist Edgar Meyer and fiddler Stuart Duncan on the Grammy-winning "Goat Rodeo Sessions," and composer of music for the post- apocalyptic film "The Hunger Games.  Even more remarkable, Mr. Thile was a 2012 recipient of a MacArthur "Genius" Award of $500,000. Speaking to The Wall Street Journal about the moment he realized he was going to receive the award Mr. Thile said, "I started getting these calls from a 312 number, which is Chicago, and in this day and age, does anyone answer their phone when they don't know the number? . . . I just figured it was a robot call telling me to vote. Finally they left a message: 'Tell no one about this call.' I don't watch tons of TV but I've seen enough to know that that's what someone says right before you get shot! My tour manager googled the number and it was the MacArthur Foundation . . . I still kind of thought that maybe my bandmates were messing with me!"

In August Mr. Thile released an album of Bach Violin Sonatas and Partitas transcribed for mandolin on Nonesuch Records, which is currently in the top ten on Billboard's Classical Album Chart. Reviewing this recording for The New Yorker, Alec Wilkinson wrote: "His elaborate and often stunning playing is laced with sadness but also with a wild, delirious pleasure, a piercing happiness, even a joy."
