HAGEN STRING QUARTET RETURNS TO PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS ON RARE U.S. TOUR
On Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 8PM in Richardson Auditorium at Alexander Hall, the Hagen String Quartet will present three masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire by Schubert, Shostakovich, and Dvorak as they return to Princeton University Concerts while on a rare and long-anticipated tour of the United States. In honor of the four siblings who founded the ensemble—three of whom are still members of the quartet—ticketholders will be treated at 7PM to a free pre-concert preview by talented sisters Sarah and Solène Le Van, Princeton University Class of 2018, in a short program of works for voice and violin. It will be a "Sibling Night" to remember. Tickets $10-50, available at princetonuniversityconcerts.org, at 609-258-9220, and in person at the Richardson Auditorium Box Office two hours prior to the concert. In addition to the concert, violinist Rainer Schmidt, the second violinist of the Hagen Quartet, will coach Princeton University students as part of the Performers as Teachers Series on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at 10AM-12PM. The event takes place in Taplin Auditorium in Fine Hall and is free and open to the public.
Founded in 1981 in Salzburg, Austria, the Hagen Quartet has quickly become one of the most preeminent string quartets in Europe. Now performing on the Stradivarius instruments previously played by the Paganini, Cleveland, and Tokyo String Quartets, the group has established itself firmly within a lineage of ensembles whose musical interpretations become the gold standard. In an exclusive contract with Deutsche Grammophon, the group has produced over forty-five recordings in the past twenty years that have embraced the entire history of the string quartet. Collaborating with the top artists of our time, including pianists Maurizio Pollini, Mitsuko Uchida, and Krystian Zimerman, the Quartet will be making a stop at Carnegie Hall with pianist Kirill Gerstein before arriving at the Princeton University Concerts stage. This will be a rare opportunity to hear the Hagens on their own as they continue to take the world by storm.
