ESTONIAN PHILHARMONIC CHAMBER CHOIR MAKES PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CONCERTS DEBUT IN THE PRINCETON UNIVERSITY CHAPEL
Princeton University Concerts’ spring Concert Classics season kicks off with the beloved Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir (“EPCC”) in their first visit to the Northeast since selling out Carnegie Hall in 2014. On Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 8PM in the beautiful Princeton University Chapel, the Choir with Artistic Director Kaspars Putnins will present a program of favorites from Northern Europe: Tchaikovsky, Tormis, Sibelius, and the uncrowned king of Estonian music, Arvo Pärt, whose vocal music is written exclusively for the EPCC.
Nominated for fourteen Grammy’s across a range of styles, the 25-voice ensemble holds a particularly celebrated place within the vocal realm. Princeton University’s Choral Director Gabriel Crouch explains:
Since that remarkable September day in 1988 when a quarter of the entire population of Estonia assembled in Tallinn to sing out their peaceful rejection of Soviet rule, the Baltic nations have established the most vibrant and relevant choral culture in the world - with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir as its flagship. Their music is uncompromisingly modern yet wonderfully infectious, and runs the gamut from the earthy, primitive energy of Veljo Tormis to the stillness and solemnity of Arvo Pärt. This concert offers us a precious fusion of the most exciting living choral tradition to be heard anywhere, with its finest exponents.
The opportunity to hear this music within the splendor of the Princeton University Chapel makes the occasion all the more special. The only Princeton University Concerts event to take place within this unique space in the 2016-17 season, this concert promises to be one of the most incomparable experiences of the 2016-17 Concerts Classics offerings.
Tickets are only $10 for students with valid id and $35 for general admission, available online at princetonuniversityconcerts.org, by phone at 609-258-9220, or at the Princeton University Chapel two hours prior to the performance.
