Unmasking the Arts: Looking to the Future

Tuesday, April 27, 2021, 7:00 PM

Program

Clarinetist Anthony McGill spearheaded the #TakeTwoKnees movement last summer in his response to the killing of George Floyd, challenging fellow musicians and Americans to draw attention to the problem of racism in their own personal ways and opening the door for music to serve as a powerful voice within the fight for social justice. He joins series host Helga Davis for an intimate conversation touching on this experience and what this past year has meant for him as a citizen, a musician, and a human being.

ABOUT UNMASKING THE ARTS>

This is the first episode of Unmasking the Arts: Looking to the Future, a new online conversation series hosted by WNYC host and musician Helga Davis. Through this series, we take a moment to reflect on the hope and resiliency inherent within the performing arts, and the pandemic’s impact on the role of the arts in our society, by engaging prominent voices to contemplate topics encompassing the intersection between the arts and contemporary issues. This includes considering how the music industry contributes to and can address climate change; the role of the arts within the context of social justice; how politics play into evolving cultural values; shaping the future of the performing arts, and more. The series aims to harness the thoughtful intent that has arisen from this far-reaching moment in our history and ensure that we unmask the arts mindfully and beneficially as we transition into a post-pandemic world. Streaming on our YouTube and Facebook pages, episodes are free and will premiere, and be announced, on a weekly basis. Subscribe to these channels for updates.
